The Breakfast Ball Buffet: June 17th

Good afternoon! Grab another coffee and get ready to tee off your week with the Breakfast Ball Buffet – your go-to newsletter for all things golf, served up with a side of simplicity and a pinch of satire. US Open week was A1, and here’s what’s on the grill this AM:

Bryson is a two-time US Open Champion 🇺🇸

Bare with me here — this is gonna be impossible for me to write without sounding biased, as I’m a die-hard Rory fan of 15 years.

Bryson and Rory gave us the best major showdown in years on Sunday. After Bryson missed a short one on 15, Rory had a 1 shot lead with 3 to play.

Inexcusably, he missed a 2.5 footer on 16 and a 4.5 footer on 18 to lose by 1. Heartbreaking.

Bryson had to make the up-and-down of the century to win, and he got it done

As expected, Bryson’s post-win celebrations were… unique. He sprinting around the property, allowing for every single fan to touch the trophy 😂

Then, the greatest moment in Golf Channel Live From history

Congrats to Bryson — the “I WON THE US OPEN” YouTube video is gonna hit like crack.

Pinehurst was nuts 🔥

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Pinehurst no. 2 provided the best major setup we’ve seen in YEARS.

A US Open setup is supposed to test every aspect of your game. At the US Open, you shouldn’t be able to get away with one part of your game being off. It’s the major that demands the highest level of near-perfection.

Pinehurst was set up perfectly this week. A perfect test of golf that allowed for great shots to be great and the bad shots to be penalized.

It didn’t give the players any margin for error, for 72 straight holes. I don’t know the last time we were able to say that about a major venue.

We are being blessed with a US Open at Pinehurst every five years for the next three decades. I cannot wait for 2029 🔥

The greatest cut-made of all time 🐐

The 194 yard par 3 9th hole at Pinehurst no. 2 was playing brutally hard to a back left pin on Friday. Sepp Straka proved earlier in the day that an ace was possible, albeit extremely unlikely.

Francesco Molinari was two shots outside of the cut-line when he stood on the 9th tee on Friday, his 18th hole of the day. He needed an ace to make the cut at the US Open…

I will go ahead and declare it the greatest cut-made in golf history, and it’s not up for debate (the 77-71 over the weekend wasn’t overly inspiring though).

Tiger talk 🐅

As per usual, hype found its way around Tiger before a major. The likes of TWLegion, Dan Rapaport, and Trevor Immelman were saying that Tiger looked better than he has in years in the practice rounds.

Of course, and rightfully so, hype was generated. But Tiger struggled his way to a MC, after shooting 74-73.

After missing the cut, Tiger was extremely frustrated and gave some concerning quotes, including this one

It may be his last US Open?!?! If this is what the new reality of Tiger is, then all hope of him winning one more major is dead. He’ll play in the Masters and the Open the same way Bernhard Langer does — just for fun.

We knew it was coming, but I didn’t think it would be this soon.

Things don’t look promising, but we’ll never shy away from the Tiger hype train. See you at the Open Championship next month.

Wyndham Clark controversy… again 😬

In March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Wyndham stirred up some controversy when fans claimed he improved one of his lies in the rough. Judge it for yourself

To be honest, it definitely was a bit sketchy, but as a first time offender, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

But then on Saturday at the US Open, he did this…

This couldn’t be a clearer case of lie improvement. He didn’t get called for anything, but definitely not a good look for the 2023 US Open champion.

Pinehurst, man 😂
