PGA Championship preview

Another major championship is upon us, with the world's best descending upon Louisville, Kentucky for the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Valhalla was built for the long hitting, ball-striking maniac. You won’t be seeing many PW-9-8 irons into par 4’s this week like we’re used to.

A huge emphasis will be on the mid-irons for the long hitters, and the long-irons for the less-long hitters.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the rough… ↓

With all that being said, Valhalla won’t play as hard as it might seem. In 2014, in very similar conditions, Rory’s winning score was -16.

I wouldn’t expect them to go that low again, but the -14 range feels about right.

Without further ado, here are our power rankings for the week ↓

Get ready for single Rory

On Tuesday morning, Rory’s manager confirmed the news that he filed for divorce from his wife of eight years.

Let’s call a spade a spade: single Rory is about to be a menace.

I’m not saying Rory is a lock to win this week, but spoiler: he’s our outright pick to win the PGA Championship.

FYI, he has 4 majors as a single man and 0 as a married man.

For those asking yourselves why he would do this the week of a major, and that it must be a mega distraction: do u not think this was planned weeks/months ago?

Do you think he won on Sunday, then woke up Monday morning and said “F it I want a divorce rn”? The answer is no. This isn’t a distraction for him just because it’s news to everyone else.

Once again, divorce sucks and I wish nothing but the best for Rory, his ex-wife and their child. But Rory might just go on an absolute tear the next few years. Don’t be surprised when it happens.

Tiger sightings

Let’s be real here: there’s little evidence to suggest that Tiger’s ready to grind it out for four rounds against the world’s best.

He’s played in four of the last 5 majors since the accident but has completed 72 holes just twice, most recently at Augusta where he shot 82-77 on the weekend.

His body simply won’t let him play enough tournaments to get into a rhythm. Going from long periods of not playing events to trying to beat Scottie, Brooks and Rory is a borderline insurmountable task, even for the GOAT.

BUT, he’s Tiger Woods, and we just want to watch him play golf. Luckily for us, we’ll be able to do that for at least 36 holes this week.

Buffet bets

After many bad showings, we actually hit an outright last week, and we plan on doing the same this week. Here are the lines we’re loving at the PGA ↓

Our favorite favorite: Rory McIlroy (+700) — You saw him last week. That form, a potentially underprepared Scottie Scheffler, AND every star in the entire universe being aligned for this to happen… we’re taking him to win his 3rd PGA Championship this week.

The line that makes no sense: Wyndham Clark (+4000) — I didn’t wanna have to do this, but Wyndham at those odds is grand larceny. He seems to fit the Valhalla blueprint perfectly. If he was +2400, I wouldn’t advise this but at those odds, bring it on.

The big 3 parlay: Scottie, Rory and Brooks all to finish top 20 (+220) — I have never been more confident that one of three players will win a golf tournament than these three this week. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I really think these three will be in it on the weekend.

Scottie is a father

After months of waiting for Scottie to withdraw mid-tournament due to the birth of his child to allow for someone else to win, his wife finally gave birth to Bennett Scheffler.

In other Scottie news, his (extremely rich) caddie, Ted Scott, is ditching bag duties on Saturday to attend his daughter’s high school graduation. Don’t fret, he’ll be back for Sunday.

Scottie can ball: Someone snuck a video of Scottie playing basketball at a local gym with a bunch of teenagers, and I’m pretty sure he’s nasty.

Crazy scenes at Payne Valley: The Tiger-designed course in Missouri got steamrolled by a tornado on Monday.

Cobra’s 3D printed irons: Cobra says they’re the first 3D printed irons ever, which is simply untrue. Bryson used a set of 3D printed Avoda irons at the Masters. Regardless, still sick.

Is Rory the biggest non-Tiger needle? Every PGA Tour tournament this year has seen a decline in viewership. Last week’s Wells Fargo on the other hand, saw an increase of over 1 million viewers from last year, thanks to Rory doing vintage Rory things.
